Awesome April

April Volunteer Hours: 3

Semester Volunteer Hours: 21

This month,  I volunteered at Touro's emergency department once again. I had my last shift this week and honestly, it was a bitter sweet time. From being reserved and unoccupied on my first shift to knowing where everything is in the stock cabinets, dressing beds and asking nurses when/where they may need extra help, I have learned so much from this experience and I have been internally rewarded from this experience. Today was also my last day of classes. I feel elated and overall fulfilled for completing this program and ending it with better grades than last semester. Looking back, I wouldn't have done anything differently because I felt like I learned so much. Volunteering at Touro further took me out of my comfort zone and made me experience the not-so-glamourous side of medicine. I enjoyed helping out when I could despite there being that's that only the doctor or nurse could do! Building short-lived bonds with patients was also a rewarding experience but seeing them in pain was the worst. Overall, I would definitely do this experience over again. With classes, I didn't necessarily over come my public speaking fear, but I have started to control my nerves about it this semester and I am very grateful for that. As stated in my previous posts, I definitely caught a grip on how to study for pharmacology and my grades reflected. We also took the NBME and although standardized testing isn't my favorite or strong suite, I felt it was a great challenge to summarize what we've learned in pharmacology during this program and that is good for me. I loved making connections with my class mates, as we saw each other almost every day for almost a year. Lastly, living alone in a new city was challenging but eye-opening and experienced-filled. I am very content and, once again, I would definitely do this experience again.
